Motherboard,
and a better feature set than you’ll find in the lowest end of the X99 range.
That’s especially important if you’re looking at the overclocking performance
of the six-core CPU SKUs. We haven’t had a chance to check out how well the i7
5820K overclocks, but MSI’s X99 Gaming 7 is only 50MHz shy of the top clock we
managed on our engineering sample i7 5960X. That bodes well for how it will
perform with the cheaper chip, and makes us excited about the powerful machines
we’ll be able to put together with this new range, without breaking the bank.
That’s not to
say this MSI board is feature-poor, though. It’s got pretty much all you could
ask of a base for your system – it’s just that the Asus has more. The X99S
Gaming 7 lines up as a solid alternative motherboard – it’s just a little lighter
on connectivity but gives the same great Haswell-E performance. If you’re going
for one of the budget chips, then MSI’s Gaming 7 makes for a capable home for
it.
In terms of
what you’re losing with the cheaper MSI, it’s all about connectivity. There are
fewer active SATA ports with the MSI, and one less SATA Express connection. The
Asus comes with an add-in M.2 x4 board, taking its quotient one up on the X99S
Gaming 7, and offers more USB 3.0 ports, 7.1 audio, double the LAN ports and
Wi-Fi capabilities too. But arguably those are luxury features, with no bearing
on the straight-line performance of the two boards.
