The Philips
Brilliance 288P6LJEB bisects the AOC and Asus models pretty precisely on price.
Now, if you’ve read the reviews of the other two, you’ll know that neither
quite nails it. The AOC was well above expectations in many regards – it edges
the Asus for static image quality and it’s about £100 cheaper – but it suffers
from some input lag that sees the Asus suddenly back in the running.
Input-wise,
we’re talking the full collection of DisplayPort 1.2 (and thus proper 60Hz refresh
support), HDMI, DVI and VGA. As with the other monitors, only DisplayPort will
enable you to drive this thing properly and you’ll need a DisplayPort 1.2
compliant video card, too. Finally, two of the ports in the four-port USB hub
support 3.0-style high bandwidth data transfer, just so you know.
As for what
else distinguishes the 288P6LJEB, well, you get the choice of four different
levels of pixel overdrive for improved response. Sadly, all but the lowest
level introduce some amount of that nasty inverse ghosting setting. The fastest
setting is so bad, we wonder why Philips bothers.
All of which
makes the 288P6LJEB a pretty nice overall package, but not outstanding. Apart
from a slightly better looking chassis and stand, it offers little over the slightly
cheaper AOC. And while it costs less than the Asus, it’s less compelling a
gaming proposition thanks to that pesky input lag. As ever, then, you pays your
money. And you takes your choice.
