As nice as
those numbers are though, they don’t tell thewhole story. As ever, it’s all about
the graphics card Aria has decided to pair with the Intel silicon, and in this
case it’s opted for an AMD GPU. That’s a rare choice, which is a shame as AMD
is making some fantastic graphics cards at the moment. In fact, the R9 280X is
probably one of the best value cards around right now.
The 4.6GHz
overclock applied to the Gladiator Hellion is probably at the limit of what
this chip can do, and it’s to Aria’s credit that it has managed to maintain a
stable machine at that level. Even in CPU-intensive benchmarks, the Aria rig
maintains the high clockspeed, enabling it to outperform every other Core
i5-based machine we’ve put through our Cinebench andX264 tests.
And when
you’re waiting for a round of Battlefield 4 to start, that SSD really makes a
difference. Your squad-mates will already be making pretty ruby-red patterns
with their digital entrails by the time the SSHD of the Chillblast finally drops
you into the action.
Like the GTX
770, the 280X is mostly a re-branded version of AMD’s top GPU from its last
generation, meaning you get a bona fide top-end graphics card for mid-range money.
The hefty 384-bit memory bus and 2GB frame buffer show itstop-end credentials.
The excellent value of the AMD GPU is part of the reason the Aria machine has a
generous components list filling out the rest of its specifications. The speedy
memory, superior mobo and Samsung SSD boot drive make the Gladiator Hellion a
more rounded machine than the Chillblast rig we’ve reviewed this issue.
So the
Chillblast machine may have the advantage in-game, but not by much, so the
improved component list in this Aria PC starts to swing things in its favour.
It’s the SSD, small though it is, that has us edging towards this Aria machine,
but the extra £100 you’re paying for that and the Devil’s Canyon chip balances things
out. All told though, the Gladiator Hellion 1000 is a well built, well specced
and well balanced rig that would grace any desktop.
But these are
gaming PCs, and the faster GPU in the Chillblast rig delivers a smoother
experience when the bullets do start flying. Interestingly though, the Nvidia advantage
starts to tail off when you plug higher resolution screens into these two rigs.
The 384-bit memory interface of the 280X eats away at the GPU advantage of the
GTX 770 in our 2,560 x 1,600 tests, while at 1080p settings the Nvidia card has
a much greater performance edge.
