Last month, we
reviewed Kingston’s MobileLite Wireless that enabled users to expand their mobile
device storage wirelessly. The Seagate Wireless Plus is similar in concept to
Kingston’s offering but sweetens the deal with a humongous 2TB storage and USB
3.0. In comparison with the MobileLite Wireless, the Wireless Plus adds some
bulk, thanks to the hard drive but it’s not a deal breaker. The drive is
pocketable and a looker as well with its premium brushed aluminium finish and two
LEDs on the front, signifying the drive’s wireless connectivity and battery.
The USB 3.0 port and the power button are placed on the side of the Wireless
Plus. Wireless Plus is like a regular USB 3.0 portable hard drive but to take
advantage of its wireless capabilities, a free app called Seagate Media needs
to be downloaded from Apple’s iTunes store or Google play store.
This allows
the drive to sync content from the cloud services and store it on the drive,
creating an additional backup. As for watching on the big screen, Seagate
Wireless Plus has a dedicated app for Samsung Smart TV and Blu-ray player
owners and even supports streaming to any DLNA connected product, Chromecast
and Apple AirPlay. Seagate claims a battery life of up to 10 hours but we got
close to 8.5 hours in our test, which we deem to be pretty good. The Seagate Wireless
Plus is a pretty stellar device that effectively bumps your mobile device’s
storage to a whopping 2TB, USB 3.0 for fast data transfers and support for
myriad of options to enjoy the content on the big screen.
The
app acts as a gateway and once connected to the Wireless Plus, shows all the
content nicely segregated according to videos, images, music or documents. The
app allows streaming of up to three different HD movies to three different users,
share the same internet connection to seven different devices and even allows
users to view the locally stored content on their Android or an iOS device and
copy them to the Wireless Plus drive or vice versa. Amongst the new features,
Seagate Wireless Plus has added support for cloud services like Dropbox and
Google Drive.
