Logitech G402 Hyperion Fury

Mouse

The reason this gaming rodent is so pacey is because of the Fusion Engine sensor at its heart. It’s called a hybrid sensor because it’s not simply relying on optical sensors to track the movement of the mouse across a given surface, it’s also using a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope.

The issue is that if a mouse moves quicker than the optical sensor alone can track, you lose accuracy and consistency of movement in-game. That’s not a problem with the clever lil G402 because the accelerometer and gyroscope are connected to a 32-bit ARM core, and are able to predict where the mouse is heading if the laser sensor loses track of it. Basically, it means that it’s pretty much guaranteed that you won’t be able to shift the G402 around your desk quicker than it can track.

Where were we? Ah yes, fastest gaming mouse eva. With the Hyperion G402, Logitech isn’t equating sensitivity with speed. It’s actually talking about how quickly the sensor is able to track the physical movement of the mouse, and the G402 is capable of tracking at speeds up to 500 inches per second (ips). That’s seriously quick, and yes, that is faster than the G502, which has a maximum tracking speed of 300ips.

And it all translates into a gaming mouse that’s incredibly reliable and accurate in the heat of virtual battle. I’m usually quite a fan of relatively high-dpi mice, such as the RAT TE – not necessarily at the top 8,200, but certainly higher than the 4,000dpi the G402 maxes out at. Yet when you’ve got such a reliable translation of motion from the mouse to your in-game avatar, you really don’t need such extreme sensitivity in your mouse.

In terms of aesthetics, the G402 is very much the younger sibling to the G502. It’s got a similar long chassis, but lacks the width of the G502. The G402 is a simpler design. That doesn’t do it a disservice, but – I’d be happier having this Fusion Engine strapped into the glorious old Logitech G9 chassis. Still, this is a fantastic mouse, offering possibly the most precise and consistent FPS gaming experience I’ve ever had.
