The brand new Haswell-E range is
the first to bring a fully-fledged octo-core Intel processor into the consumer
market. Through the magic of Hyper-Threading, that means 16 threads of
processing that should be capable of chewing through any multi-core optimized application
faster than you can say, er, multi-core optimized application (pithy - Ed).
These are the times we love being
involved in this fast-paced industry. The times when whole new computing
platforms arrive on our test benches. Exciting and intriguing times. With this
latest launch we’ve got a trio of brand new products, introducing new
generations of memory, motherboard and, importantly, new CPU silicon.
Because of Haswell-E’s server heritage,
though, you also get the added might of the next generation of memory: DDR4. In
general terms that doesn’t mean a great deal right now, but DDR4 offers higher
out-of-the-box performance as well as lowerpower consumption and higher memory
density. All we need now are new GPUs.
Along with that sexeh silicon you
need a new motherboard chipset and so the X99 was born. Asus’ lovely-looking
X99-Deluxe is a mighty pricey board, but it’s also one of the most fully featured
we’ve ever tested. Just look at that frickin’ back panel.
